One run was the difference at PNC Park as the Sea Isle SeaGulls defeated the Sunshine State Stalkers 9 to 8. Heath Bell(5-1) slammed the door shut in an excellent relief performance. He was reached for no hits and 1 walk in 2 innings. Sunshine State threatened in the 9th but Sea Isle was able to put down the rally. Bobby Jenks gained credit for his 28th save. Bob Howry(2-5) was the losing pitcher in relief. Joe Girardi was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.' Maddux got help from Rafael Soriano who earned his 2nd save. Bronson Arroyo(11-17) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Bobby Cox was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.' Dan Haren had a strong outing as the Detroit 40's defeated the Yardley Oaks 6 to 3 at Comerica Park. Detroit wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring one runner. The Yardley bats were silent in the 9th. Haren(9-17) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 41st save. Fausto Carmona(14-13) was the losing pitcher. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. With this win, Detroit has a 82-69 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With this loss, Yardley has a 6-4 record of late, 87-64 overall.
