WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Carlos Guillen robbed Victor Martinez of a base hit.

In a great finish the Minnesota SnowBirds came back in the top of the ninth
and held on to win over the Yardley Oaks by a score of 6 to 4 at Yankee
Stadium.

Minnesota came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning as they
scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Reggie
Willits who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he slapped a one-base
hit plating two runs. Minnesota rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon.

The win was credited to Alan Embree(1-1) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing
no runs. Francisco Rodriguez(1-5) was charged with the loss in relief. He
pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and 2 walks.

Ron Gardenhire was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'

Manny Ramirez hit a homerun and had 3 RBI and Jamey Wright went 3 strong
innings as the Pinehurst Pin Oaks defeated the Cherry Hill Maulers by the
score of 12 to 8 at US Cellular Field.

In the top of the 6th inning Pinehurst scored 4 runs. The key offensive
moment was provided by Hideki Matsui who helped quiet the crowd when he
blasted a two-run home run (his 10th of the season). Cherry Hill was not
lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory
eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win
ballgames.

Miguel Batista(16-7) was the winner allowing 8 runs in 6 innings. Wright
earned the save, his 3rd. Scott Downs(1-3) was hit with the loss in relief.

Shawn Hill(9-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He was reached for 6
hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings and served up 2 'big flies'. Sunshine
State threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Takashi Saito got the save, his 30th. Aaron Harang(13-11) absorbed the loss.
He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 innings of work.

'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Joe Girardi 'But we
