Minnesota won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Jerry Hairston Jr led off and started the rally when he banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Mauer came up and he slapped a single. Nelson Cruz then stroked a one-base hit. Mauer then suprised everyone by stealing home. Nick Markakis came to the plate and hit a deep fly. Placido Polanco kept the inning going and drew a walk. Fernando Tatis followed, but he was set down on strikes. Minnesota managed 12 hits in their victory. Bobby Jenks(1-0) allowed no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Jenks was helped out by Mariano Rivera who recorded his 7th save. Detroit had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Grady Sizemore kicked off the action when he doubled. Pedroia followed and he tripled. Michael Young then hit a sacrifice fly. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all. The victory was credited to Jose Valverde(1-0) who went 2/3 of an inning, allowing 1 run. Jon Rauch(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. Milton Bradley smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Sunshine State Stalkers defeated the Washington Scrub NL 1 by a score of 12 to 10 at Dolphins Stadium. Bradley was spectacular at the plate. He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 1st inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Washington threatened in the 9th but Sunshine State was able to put down the rally. The victory was credited to Scott Olsen(1-1) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. Kevin Gregg was credited with his 1st save. The loss was charged to Aquilino Lopez(0-1) in relief. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Manny Acta 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'
