After an out was recorded, Michael Young was the sparkplug when he doubled. Dustin Pedroia was next and he doubled. Pedroia proceeded to steal third base. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Washington is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 39-69, worst in the division. The crucial at-bat was provided by Jack Cust who helped quiet the crowd when he quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam (his 21st of the season). Toronto won despite being out-hit by Oakland 12 hits to 7. Andy Sonnanstine(7-9) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Sonnanstine got help from Manny Parra who was credited with his 2nd save. Greg Maddux(4-10) was charged with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Cito Gaston said after the game. 'Sonnanstine did not have command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'
