Hiroki Kuroda(10-8) pitched a fine game. He allowed 1 hit and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Kuroda recorded 8 strikeouts. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Kuroda got help from Heath Bell who earned his 31st save. Carl Pavano(9-7) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. Jim Leyland was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks me off!' Colorado won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Jose Reyes doubled. Chris Young stepped up to the plate and he doubled making Colorado the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Oakland out-hit Colorado 14 to 11, but Colorado ended up with more runs. Carlos Marmol(2-1) allowed 1 run in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Guillermo Mota(2-2) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits and no walks. CINCINNATI AT SEA ISLE Blue Bombers.... 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 7 0 Seagulls........ 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 7 0 Win:Pelfrey(9-6) Loss:Wells(6-12) Save:Wilson(20th) Mike Pelfrey(9-6) and Randy Wells(6-12) dueled it out with Pelfrey and the smoking-hot Sea Isle Seagulls coming out on top of the Cincinnati Blue Bombers by the score of 2 to 1. Pelfrey pitched well for Sea Isle in their victory. He went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning. Pelfrey got relief help from Brian Wilson who gained credit for his 20th save. With the win, Sea Isle continued their winning ways; their streak now stands at 7 games and counting. John Russell was in a great frame of mind in the clubhouse after the game, 'Everybody's contributing now. Timely hitting, some slick fielding plays and good pitching when we need it. Man, when that's happening, this sure is an easy job!' The Yardley Oaks topped the Baltimore Lions by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1. The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Yardley was victorious in the 10th inning. Cliff Pennington smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' giving Yardley the victory as 38,153 happy fans celebrated wildly. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. The win was credited to Neftali Feliz(5-2) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. Mitchell Boggs(0-3) took the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings. Minnesota scored 4 runs in the decisive bottom of the 2nd inning when they came up with 6 base hits. That was all Fausto Carmona(11-8) needed. Minnesota ended up with 12 hits for the game while Washington had 6. Brian Fuentes earned the save, his 4th. Mark Buehrle(6-14) absorbed the loss. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 6 hits and no walks.
ATLANTA AT WALL ST Prohibitioners.. 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 - 2 8 0 Millionaires.... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 2 - 4 11 0 Win:Kennedy(9-4) Loss:Saito(0-2) Homeruns- D.Wright(18th), C.Hart(32nd), A.Pujols(36th), R.Zimmerman(22nd) Ian Kennedy allowed Mike Quade to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Wall St Millionaires pulled out a win over the Atlanta Prohibitioners by a score of 4 to 2 at Wrigley Field. Wall St scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Prince Fielder led off and he doubled. Corey Hart came to the plate and bombed a two-run dinger giving Wall St the win as 40,122 happy fans joyfully celebrated. Wall St totaled 11 hits on the night. Kennedy(9-4) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Takashi Saito(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. No one has been able to stop Wall St lately as they lengthened their winning streak to 6 games. BOSTON AT PHILADELPHIA Stranglers...... 0 1 0 0 4 0 1 2 0 - 8 13 0 Phranks......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 1 0 Win:Liriano(6-6) Loss:Rodriguez(12-4) Homeruns- H.Kendrick(2nd) Francisco Liriano was on top of his game, blanking Philadelphia on just 1 hit at Citizen's Bank Park where the Boston Stranglers beat the Philadelphia Phranks 8 to 0. Liriano(6-6) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Philadelphia hitters. He gave up just 1 hit and 2 walks in 9 innings. Liriano racked up 10 strikeouts lowering his ERA to 3.93. Boston banged out 13 hits on the night. Wandy Rodriguez(12-4) suffered the loss. He was knocked around by Boston, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings. Liriano was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!' TORONTO AT CHERRY HILL Argonauts....... 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 - 4 6 0 Maulers......... 1 0 1 0 0 2 0 5 - 9 13 0 Win:Marcum(9-1) Loss:Santana(10-8) Homeruns- J.Hamilton(28th), V.Wells(24th), M.Napoli(25th) Shaun Marcum racked up an impressive total of 13 strikeouts and Mike Napoli went deep and had 3 RBI as the strong Cherry Hill Maulers bested the Toronto Argonauts 9 to 4 at US Cellular Field. Marcum(9-1) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and no walks in 9 innings and was touched for 2 homeruns. Cherry Hill had 13 hits for the afternoon. Johan Santana(10-8) ended up with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Marcum was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'
