Minnesota found themselves trailing quickly as the Detroit bats came through in the first inning when they came up with 2 runs on 2 hits. That early scoring was all that Jeremy Guthrie(15-11) needed. Detroit had 10 hits overall, while Minnesota had 6. Colby Lewis(9-15) ended up with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 and 1/3 innings of work. Sea Isle surrendered all of the runs Boston needed in the 7th inning when they scored 5 runs on 3 hits. The highlight belonged to David Ortiz who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he popped a two-run clout over the fence. Sea Isle had 11 hits in the game while Boston had 5, but Boston had the more timely hits. The winning pitcher was Francisco Liriano(11-8) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Craig Breslow recorded the save, his 8th. Josh Johnson(10-9) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Bob Geren said after the game. 'Liriano did not have command of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!' Sunshine State took the lead for good in the 4th inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. The highlight belonged to Manny Ramirez who quieted the crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing home two baserunners. Baltimore had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The victory was credited to Brett Myers(12-9) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Myers was helped out by Heath Bell who recorded his 43rd save. Justin Masterson(6-18) absorbed the loss. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 8 batters in 5 and 2/3 innings. This win by Sunshine State continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 99-50. Baltimore has a record of 37-112, worst in the division after the loss. Clay Hensley(1-0) won the game with a masterful relief performance. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and no walks in 3 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 3.60 to 2.63. Colorado won despite being out-hit by Atlanta 7 hits to 4. Hensley got relief help from Carlos Marmol who gained credit for his 27th save. The losing pitcher was R.A. Dickey(8-10). Despite the loss, he struckout 11 Colorado batters in 7 innings.

Washington brought 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning when they had 4 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Ian Stewart who thrilled the crowd when he doubled with all three baserunners touching home. Washington lit up the scoreboard in the 6th inning with 4 runs on 4 hits. Washington had 20 hits for the game and Oakland had 13. The victory went to D.J. Carrasco(2-0) who went 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Pedro Feliciano(0-2) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 4 hits and no walks. The crucial at-bat was provided by Jose Bautista who made the crowd come alive when he smashed a two-run homer. Yardley had a total of 7 hits for the game. C.J. Wilson(11-15) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Neftali Feliz earned the save, his 24th. Doug Fister(9-11) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 and 1/3 innings of work. That scoring would be all that was needed. Wall St was out-hit by Philadelphia, 15 hits to 8. Chris Carpenter(10-11) was given the loss. He allowed Philadelphia 7 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work. The key offensive moment was provided by Nick Swisher who came through for the home fans when he smacked a three-run homer. Cherry Hill finished with 12 hits while Cincinnati ended up with 6. Clay Buchholz(16-2) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. The loss was charged to Mitch Talbot(6-23). He surrended 3 homeruns in his 4 and 1/3 innings.
