Colorado fell behind quickly as the Atlanta offense came through in the first inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. Colorado threatened in the 9th but Atlanta was able to put down the rally. The winning pitcher was Randy Johnson(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Johnson got help from Brian Fuentes who was credited with his 3rd save. Zach Duke(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 10 hits and 1 walk. The Minnesota SnowBirds won by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1. Minnesota scored the deciding run in the top of the 8th inning. Nick Markakis stroked a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Carlos Pena came to the plate and drew a walk. After another out, Nelson Cruz stepped in and he delivered a base-hit to load the bases. Manny Delcarmen then unleashed a wild pitch. B.J. Upton came to the plate and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Pinehurst was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th. Jose Arredondo(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Arredondo was helped out by Mariano Rivera who recorded his 3rd save. Mike Mussina(0-2) absorbed the loss. The Yardley Oaks eventually emerged as victors over the Detroit 40's by the score of 4 to 0. Yardley took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 2nd inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Harden and Yardley. That was all the run support Harden required. Yardley had 7 hits overall, while Detroit had 4.
