Yunel Escobar was a one-man wrecking crew. He smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the 3rd inning, doubled in the 5th inning and doubled clearing all three ducks off the pond. in the 8th inning. Yardley kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings. Duchscherer got help from Rowland-Smith who earned his 1st save. Cha Seung Baek(0-3) was charged with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Escobar said. Minnesota came up with 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Dejesus who quieted the home crowd when he slapped a base-hit plating two runs. Detroit had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Mariano Rivera(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Zack Greinke(4-1) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. Minnesota now has a record of a division leading 13-7. Detroit has a record of 13-10 after the loss.
