What an evening for the Pinehurst PinOaks! They shellacked the Boston
Stranglers pitching for 11 runs while Adam Wainwright(2-5), with relief help
from Manny Delcarmen, held Boston to 1 run.

Ryan Howard made sure the Pinehurst fans enjoyed themselves. He lined a
base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 1st inning, slapped a single in the
5th inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 15th of the
season) in the 8th inning. For the game Pinehurst out-hit Boston 18 to 6.

Joe Saunders(6-5) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 14 hits and 2
walks in 6 innings. 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,'
Howard said. 'That's it'

At Yankee Stadium, the Yardley faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel. C.C. Sabathia(7-4) finally bested his Yardley counterpart,

Youkilis provided much of the offense. He laced a single in the 4th inning,
bombed a two-run dinger in the 6th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 10th
of the season) in the 8th inning. Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Scott Baker(5-6) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Kevin
Gregg was credited with his 9th save. Ubaldo Jimenez(7-5) was the losing
pitcher.

Fredi Gonzalez was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only
we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Lastings Milledge robbed Xavier Nady of a Homerun!

Gil Meche dominated striking out 11 Toronto batters at Rogers Centre as the
Detroit 40's, running on all cylinders, ripped the Toronto Scrub AL 1 by a
large 15 to 0 margin.

Meche(6-4) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Toronto
hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings reducing his ERA from 5.02 to 4.52. Detroit kept the scorekeepers
busy in the 1st inning with 5 runs on 7 hits and the 2nd inning with 4 runs
on 4 hits. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.

Jon Garland(1-6) was given the loss. 'When Meche is on like that it is a
tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Cito Gaston said. 'He always pitches
well against us.'
