finally emerged victorious over Cherry Hill Maulers, 2 to 1.

Toronto scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. Eric Hinske hit a
bases-empty home run (his 17th of the season). Geoff Blum was the next
batter, but he struck out. Rod Barajas then drew a walk. Brendan Harris
stepped in and he laced a one-base hit. One out later, Lastings Milledge got
his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Cherry Hill
had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Garland was helped out by Jon Rauch who recorded his 11th save. Cito Gaston
was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win
all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to
happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

scoreboard in the 1st inning and defeated the Oakland Scrub AL 2 by a score
of 5 to 2 at Metrodome.

Minnesota did all of it's offensive work in the 1st inning when they tallied 5
runs on 4 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Matt Garza(9-11)
and Minnesota. That was all the run support Garza required. Neither team
managed to score after the 4th inning.

Mariano Rivera recorded his 24th save. Fausto Carmona(1-2) was the losing
pitcher. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Chipper Jones had 5 hits and 5 RBI at PNC Park as the Sea Isle Seagulls beat
the hopeless Colorado Scrub NL 2 10 to 6.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Jones. He slapped a one-base hit scoring a run in the 1st
inning, delivered a single in the 3rd inning, smacked a base-hit which plated
a run in the 5th inning, lashed a single resulting in a run in the 6th inning
and tripled plating two runs in the 8th inning. Colorado threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.

Cole Hamels(6-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 6
runs. The loss was charged to Joe Blanton(6-10). He was knocked around
pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.

'We won because we did the little things right.' John Russell said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'
