He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4th inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 5th inning, laced a one-base hit in the 7th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 28th of the season) in the 9th inning. Cherry Hill rapped out 12 hits for the night. The victory was credited to Sabathia(16-6) who went the distance, allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Andy Pettitte(4-11). The key at-bat was by Joe Mauer who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he stroked a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Overall Minnesota out-hit Oakland 18 to 10. Perez(3-0) allowed no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. George Sherrill(2-10) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning. After the game, it took a long while before Bob Geren emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Minnesota locker room.'
