Detroit threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. The win went to James Shields(20-4) who allowed 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Brad Lidge earned the save, his 27th. The losing pitcher was Gil Meche(11-13). 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Shields, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.' Boston finished with 12 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 2. Joakim Soria gained credit for his 31st save. Josh Johnson(4-3) took the loss. Matsuzaka was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
