WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: Mike Napoli blocked the plate, saving a run!

Third baseman Chone Figgins had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Camden Yards as the
Cherry Hill Maulers came back dramatically to top the Baltimore Scrub AL 1 by
the score of 6 to 3.

Cherry Hill won the game with a rally in the 9th inning as they scored 5 runs
on 6 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Figgins who disappointed
the partisan crowd when he singled plating two runs. Daniel Bard(1-0) got
help from Heath Bell who pitched great and earned his 5th save.

Ramon Troncoso(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. After the game, it took
a long while before Cito Gaston emerged from his office. In a subdued tone
he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry
I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll
understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in
the Cherry Hill locker room.'

44,340 fans were treated to a fine game at Great American Bpk as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Scrub NL 2 won by the
slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.

Cincinnati brought 3 runs across the plate in the 7th inning with the help of
3 hits. Fernando Tatis opened up the inning nicely when he doubled. Ryan
Roberts stepped into the batter's box and he blasted a two-run home run.
Scott Hairston then ripped a solo home run. One out later, Ian Stewart got
his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. A wild and woolly affair, this
game saw the lead change 5 times.

The victory went to D.J. Carrasco(2-2) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing 1
run. Carrasco got help from Fernando Rodney who earned his 3rd save. Jeremy
Affeldt(1-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits
in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Center fielder Vernon Wells blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI at Citizen's Bank
Park as the Washington Scrub NL 1 beat the Philadelphia Phranks by the count
of 6 to 5.

Obviously without his best stuff, Ricky Romero(2-2) still hung on to pick up
the win. He gave up 5 runs, 8 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings. Romero
struckout 6 Philadelphia batters. Although they lost, Philadelphia did
out-hit Washington 9 to 6.

Juan Gutierrez was credited with his 1st save. Jair Jurrjens(2-1) was the
loser. He allowed just 6 runs and 6 hits in 9 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Manny Acta said after the game. 'Romero did not have command of
his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
