'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Ron Gardenhire said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?' Hall was in a groove all day. He smacked a three-run homer in the 1st inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 5th inning and smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning. The Detroit offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings. The victory went to Haren(11-11) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Brett Cecil(6-13) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work. 'I felt great out there today' Hall said. 'I was seeing the ball perfectly, and I was right on it with my swing. Boston wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by David Ortiz who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he clubbed a two-run home run. Boston had a total of 17 hits for the game. Gonzalez(8-7) was the winner allowing 7 runs for the game. Justin Verlander(11-9) took the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 8 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Billingsley(9-10) had a strong outing. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Atlanta had 7 hits for the afternoon. Rafael Soriano earned the save, his 18th. Barry Zito(7-9) was the loser. Atlanta scored big getting 4 runs off him in 2 and 2/3 innings. Jim Tracy was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.' Cole Hamels(9-9) earned his pay with a solid performance for Sea Isle. He went 7 and 1/3 innings surrendering 8 hits and 1 walk. Sea Isle had 12 hits for the game and Wall St had 9. Brian Wilson was credited with his 21st save. Tim Hudson(16-7) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 6 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

An offensive explosion by Washington in the 8th inning ended any Sunshine State hopes for a victory as they pummeled Sunshine State for 7 runs on 5 hits. The key at-bat was by Cody Ross who disappointed the partisan crowd when he doubled clearing all three ducks off the pond. Sunshine State had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Huston Street(2-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3 innings and allowing 3 runs. Shawn Camp recorded his 1st save. The loss was charged to Jonny Venters(2-4) in relief. Washington knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 4 runs in 2 innings. 'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Edwin Rodriguez 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.' Swisher provided much of the offense. He tripled scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning, doubled in the 7th inning and cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 8th inning. Baltimore was out-hit by Cherry Hill, 15 hits to 11. C.C. Sabathia(15-7) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. The losing pitcher was John Lackey(5-16). He allowed Cherry Hill 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. 'I had good swings tonight,' Swisher said, 'Everything felt right'. The streaking Philadelphia Phranks won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. The deciding run was scored by Philadelphia in the bottom of the 8th. After an out was recorded, Omar Infante clubbed a solo home run. Dan Uggla was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Joel Peralta(4-2) got help from Billy Wagner who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 31st save. Edward Mujica(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. Philadelphia continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 7 games and counting. Dusty Baker was very irritated after the contest. 'Just our luck to run into a team that's playing like a juggernaut right now. I have to congratulate Charlie Manuel on his team's recent performance. A very impressive run.'
