NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 2011 Too Old For This Date: 8/28/2011
MINNESOTA AT BALTIMORE Snow Birds...... 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 - 2 6 3 Lions........... 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 - 3 8 1 Win:Masterson(6-16) Loss:Jepsen(1-1) Justin Masterson tossed a complete game as the Baltimore Lions topped the Minnesota Snow Birds by a score of 3 to 2 at Camden Yards. The game was decided in the bottom of the 8th inning. Derrek Lee drew a walk. Ryan Spilborghs followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Chase Headley came to the plate and hit a single, and an error was also committed. Bobby Abreu was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Minnesota made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Masterson(6-16) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Kevin Jepsen(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. 'This was a tough loss,' said Ron Gardenhire, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.' It seemed that Cincinnati pitching was serving up softballs for Pujols to hit. He slapped a base-hit in the 2nd inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 5th inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 6th inning and launched a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Wall St lit up the scoreboard in the 5th inning with 9 runs on 10 hits. Wall St rapped out 20 hits for the afternoon. It was the 4th shutout of the year for Kennedy(13-5). Mitch Talbot(6-21) was given the loss. Wall St knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 6 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. The critical plate appearance was by Fukudome who disappointed the partisan crowd when he quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam. Overall Sunshine State out-hit Washington 13 to 7. The winning pitcher was Jonny Venters(3-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Huston Street(3-7) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 2 innings.

The Boston Stranglers won by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. Craig Breslow(6-8) was the winning pitcher in relief. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Detroit had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Carl Pavano(11-11) was tagged with the loss. He allowed Boston 7 runs in 5 innings of work. Sabathia(18-7) escaped virtually unscathed against the Oakland hitters. He allowed just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Cherry Hill finished with 14 hits in the victory. Brett Cecil(6-17) was given the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. 'Sabathia took our guys to school' Bob Geren said.
